This board has 18 total 'I/O' pins, 10 columns and 8 rows, which can be arranged as a matrix of buttons for a total of 80 switches. Or you can use any subset as individual GPIO input or outputs. The nicest part of the keypad driver is that it has a 10-element event FIFO queue. Since it's I2C (StemmaQT/Qwiic/EasyC compatible) it's very easy to use with any microcontroller or computer.

The MCP23017 is a device that adds 16 new digital inputs or outputs to a microcontroller using I2C communication, so it does not even use new pins on a microcontroller assuming you have other I2C devices. This breakout makes it easy to use this chip with a standard I2C connector and pins that can be connected to a breadboard.
